Female Rappers I Want To See Guest Star on Rap Sh!t
"We're in the middle of a bad bitch Renaissance!"
I think female rappers are the most charismatic group of people in the world.
Brimming with personality, sexuality, rawness, relatability and more, women in hip hop have made their mark since the beginning of the genre, from Salt n Pepas and Lil Kims of the past to the Cardi Bs and Nicki Minajs of today.
I was so delighted when I found out Issa Rae was making a TV show about women rappers. Anyone familiar with the Issa Rae origin story knows how important music is to her creative process. Her characters on both Awkward Black Girl and Insecure hilariously use rapping as an outlet for their emotions. Behind the scenes, Issa has been working with female rappers for years now, such as using several Kari Faux songs on the Insecure soundtrack, bringing the City Girls on as producers on Rap Sh!t or signing Baby Tate to her record label.
Rap Sh!t’s first season did not disappoint, a hilarious look at Miami based rap duo, Shawna & Mia, the show was not afraid to portray the nitty gritty of the music industry.
There were several celebrity cameos in the first season like Maliibu Miitch, Timbaland and Brent Faiyaz and it made me wonder which female rappers I would love to see guest star in the future
Megan thee Stallion
Megan has come down with the acting bug lately. She had a guest spot on P-Valley this year playing her rap alter ego, Tina Snow, quickly followed up with a cameo in Marvel’s She-Hulk. Her two short scenes on She-Hulk went viral and caused a whole (ridiculous!) debate on whether it was appropriate for her to twerk while on TV (or something to that extent, idk they’re always mad at her for nothing). While I have absolutely no interest in watching She-Hulk, I thought her cameo was hysterical, it literally had me laughing for 15 minutes after watching it.
Role: I definitely think she should guest star as herself. Her hype and party loving energy seems perfect for a one episode friendship with Mia especially.
Flo Milli
A fellow Southern queen like Mia and Shawna, Flo Milli’s iconic “Beef Flomix” has already been featured in the show and I think it’s time for a promotion. Flo’s debut album roll out consisted of a series of sketches where she recreated classic reality TV moments. Tyra Banks’ iconic “Be Quiet Tiffany” rant from America’s Next Top Model and Tiffany “New York” Pollard’s dramatic exit from Flavor of Love were two of my favorites. Flo seems a natural on screen when playing bitchy, mean and vapid characters.
Role: Flo’s rap persona has always been focused on how mean and "not friendly” she is. I think a fictional character that acts as a rival for Mia and Shawna is right in her wheelhouse.
Yung Miami
The City Girls are already executive producers on Rap Sh!t so I expect both JT and Yung Miami to make their way on screen some way in the show’s future, but I especially think Young Miami is destined for multimedia stardom. This year she started a talk show for Revolt, Caresha Please and with only a handful of episodes out, she’s already taken over the culture. Every clip from her show seems to go viral these days and the funny and frank questions Yung Miami asks her guests have caused social media debates for weeks on end and even led to some dubbing her the next "Oprah".
Role: Similar to how talk show hosts like Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert have guest starred as themselves on television shows, Yung Miami needs to interview Mia and Shawna on a fictionalized version of Caresha Please in an episode.
Iggy Azalea
Just kidding!
Y’all why does Reigna Reign rap better than Iggy?
Trina
The original Miami bitch herself, the story of Florida hip hop could not be told without Trina’s massive contribution to it. Issa Rae and the other writers of Rap Sh!t understand her significance to Miami, opening the pilot with “Take It to da House”, a Trick Daddy song that also features Trina. Kid Fury, a Miami native and writer on the show, is known to be a huge Trina fan. It feels apt that she involves herself somehow on screen. While she doesn’t have much acting experience, I’m sure they could figure something out for her.
Role: A guest spot as an older and wiser mentor to Shawna and Mia’s fledgling group would be perfect for Trina. Especially since they ended the finale on tenuous terms, maybe a strong talking to from a veteran will get them back on track.
It was only as I was finishing up this issue did I realize that all four women I chose for this wish list are from the South. Rap Sh!t's soundtrack is littered with Southern rappers and the South has been the birth place of many distinct genres of hip hop, trap being the biggest one. Issa Rae herself has said they made a point to create a sonic landscape that reflects the characters' Southern states upbringing. As a television show set in the music industry, celebrity cameos are expected, I hope going forward those cameos also keep the original roots of the show.
